Enchanted Windows

To kick off the holiday shopping season years ago, department stores (especially those in bigger cities) trimmed their windows with mechanical dolls and animals to attract shoppers. It became an annual tradition for many families to travel downtown, and to go from store to store to see the creations. It was inexpensive entertainment for children. New York City is known even today for its fantastic holiday window creations.

This year the library dressed our windows with this tradition in mind.  We hope you enjoy them as December comes to a close.

C-FC 4H TreeCreative kids in the C-FC – 4H summer library program have designed a fanciful tree that is on display in the library until August 21st. Construction paper leaves and branches in the canopy, and yarn and marker creatures on the trunk make this 10 foot beauty a substantial addition to the library’s inner landscape. Retreat from the heat. Come sit in the shade (and the air conditioning) of your neighborhood library.

Have you ever painted a rain barrel? The Alma Public Library has a beautiful painted rain barrel on display. Painted by artist Betty Kendrick, the barrel is designed to attract painters for the 2015 Rain Barrel Painting Contest, sponsored by the Washburn Neighborhood Association in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The contest attracts artists of all ages and abilities.  Painting the barrels is fun, and the event helps to promote water conservation!

The barrels will be auctioned off at the Washburn Garden Expo on March 21st.  For more information, visit the website: www.washburnneighborhood.orgRain Barrel.
