Our tree had lost some of its shine after the gifts were picked up by the Buffalo County Health Department for distribution to local families, so Wednesday Story Hour participants came to the rescue! Diane Wald lead the efforts, helping kids and adults make the colorful stars, ornaments and the paper chain you see here.  Thanks everyone for lighting up our Lobby.

The Buffalo County Giving Tree is a collaboration of the Alma Public Library and the Buffalo County Health Department.

The library has been focused on incorporating STEAM demonstrations and activities in the summer programming this year.  What’s STEAM? It’s education with an emphasis on science, technology, engineering, math and the use of art to design.  Annie Lisowski from the UW-Extension offered 3 Sidewalk Science sessions for pre-schoolers: sharing an experiment with vinegar, baking soda and food coloring, drawing houses and creating pet rocks!

Kids in the C-FC 4-H program created munsen ring fidget spinners using assorted hardware, while learning about friction and centripetal/centrifugal forces. They also studied prosthetic devices and learned about how they are used.

Every dog should have a job like Riley’s.  He’s a detection dog, and he works with Deputy Sheriff Mike Osmond of the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department.  A labrador retriever with a big heart and a great nose, Riley helps Mike locate illegal drugs by sniffing for them. When the dog sniffs something suspicious, he scratches at it enthusiastically. Mike investigates and provides Riley with a food reward which makes this dog very happy!  Thanks to Mike and Riley for visiting during our Preschool Storytime at the library.
